Chris Chance, Ph.D. Licensed Clinical Psychologist |
Dr. Chance earned her bachelor's degree with Honors in Psychology from Brown University in 1989. After working in school settings with children with emotional and developmental issues, as well as working as an outreach counselor with youth and families referred through the Massachusetts Department of Social Services, she went on to earn a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Syracuse University. Her formal training also included an internship at Dartmouth Medical School's Psychology Fellowship program, with a placement at West Central Community Mental Health Center, and a post-doctoral Fellowship in Adolescent and Child Psychology with joint appointment at Harvard Medical School, working at McLean Hospital's adolescent Acute Residential Treatment program (completed 1999). Dr. Chance has had the honor of listening to people with a variety of challenges in a variety of settings, and her roles and positions as a treatment provider have included the following: Child Team Manager for a Community Mental Health Center, collaborator with juvenile service systems and collateral providers, public and private school consultant, and Warrior Health Clinic Psychologist within a Military Treatment Facility. Dr. Chance strives to apply both the science and art of psychotherapy by thoroughly evaluating each individual or family group with respect to "best fit" treatment. She is trained to offer a variety of modalities of psychotherapy from cognitive-behavioral approaches to family systems interventions, and may integrate various approaches to most effectively help. Presenting concerns of special interest to Dr. Chance include trauma survival and recovery, phase of life stress and resilient identity transformation, coping with grief and loss, concerns of self-care (e.g., problem habits such as self-cutting, distressed eating patterns, or co-dependent patterned behaviors), and "stuck" family communication patterns. Dr. Chance is an experienced provider of individual, family, and group therapies. She currently works with people age 12 and older, but younger children may be invited to join family therapy sessions. She has been independently licensed by the NH Board of Mental Health since 1999, and is a member of the American Psychological Association and the New Hampshire Psychological Association. Dr. Chance has earned a side-certification as a Kripalu YogaDance instructor, and if appropriate integrates practical Yoga skills with traditional cognitive-behavioral appraoches to effectively teach relaxation and meditation to psychotherapy clients seeking stress management strategies. Dr. Chance encourages collaborative treatment planning, with the client's goals and healthiest insights and self-knowledge guiding the process. She believes the combination of a professional with deep understanding of the change process, and a breadth of experience and knowledge base, plus a client open to making real change to improve his or her life experience makes for a remarkable opportunity, which is always a learning experience for all. |
