Dr. Cynthia Hess began her career working with children and families after earning her Master of
Arts degree in applied psychology from Antioch New England University and Certificate of
Advanced Graduate Studies in school psychology from Rivier University. She worked for 17 years
as a school counselor and school psychologist before obtaining her doctoral degree in counseling
and school psychology from Rivier University.
Dr. Hess completed her pre-doctoral internship at Rochester Institute of Technology where she
gained practical experience working with children and families at Hillside Children's Center in
Rochester, New York. She has experience utilizing a variety of evidence-based treatment
modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy,
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and mindfulness. She has also received
training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Dr. Hess has deep appreciation for the challenges faced by children and families confronting
extraordinary life circumstances such as divorce, economic hardship, substance misuse and
abuse, trauma, and mental illness. She has a keen awareness of the stress many children and
adolescents, and their families, experience and the negative life outcomes, such as anxiety,
depression, substance use, and school failure or underachievement that can result. She uses an
integrative treatment approach that is client-centered, evidence-based and incorporates
mindfulness strategies to reduce stress and increase resilience.
